Boeing’s Massive Dreamlifter Lands at the Wrong Airport, Gets Stuck (Updated)

Pilots flying Boeing’s massive 747 Dreamlifter landed at the wrong airport yesterday and were stuck there overnight.
The modified jumbo jets hopscotch the world picking up sections of the 787 Dreamliner and flying them to the company’s factories in Everett, Washington and North Charleston, South Carolina. But last night instead of landing at McConnell Air Force Base to retrieve nose sections made by Spirit Aerosystems, they landed several miles away at Jabara airport. No big deal? Big deal: The runway at Jabara is 6,101 feet long, a bit shorter than the 747′s normal takeoff requirements
Pilots landing at the wrong airport is nothing new. It can be an easy mistake, with airports often lined up with each other and especially for pilots flying into unfamiliar areas, and at night. But it is hard to imagine why the pilots on the Dreamlifter — who presumably have flown into McConnell many times before to pick up 787 parts — would not have been very familiar with the Wichita area and the approach procedure.

Effective December 20, Winamp will officially pass away. AOL is giving up on the media player it acquired in 1999, and will no longer host the software on Winamp.com.

Perhaps you heard the news, shed a tear of nostalgia, made an off-hand llama-whipping joke and moved on. Winamp deserves more than that. This is a legendary piece of software whose responsibility for the digital music revolution goes hand-in-hand with Napster. Illegal file sharing services merely provided the tunes. Winamp let us play them.
As AOL has been gracious enough to give us a month’s notice before yanking Winamp from its servers, it’s only appropriate to give the 16 year-old MP3 software another listen.

McHenry County College board approves levy, eyes tuition increases

CRYSTAL LAKE – The McHenry County College Board of Trustees finalized a property tax levy freeze Thursday, but residents could still see a slight increase in bills because of declining property values.

Trustees approved a levy freeze that will result in the college collecting the same amount of property tax revenue it did the previous fiscal year – $27.9 million. But because assessed property values are expected to decrease by 3 percent, the rate will still need to increase to make up the difference.
College estimates show the owner of a $250,000 home would have to pay roughly $6.50 more a year to the institution.
The decision to hold the levy flat could cost the college roughly $545,000 depending on new growth. Money from reserves would be needed to make up the deficit.
Passing on the potential $545,000 this year would cause the revenue to be lost forever as any future levy increase would be building off a base that never captured that new growth and inflation adjustment.
Some trustees had pushed for increasing the levy to try and capture new growth, but were outnumbered 4-3 in previous meetings. The levy was unanimously approved on a consent agenda Thursday.
With a levy freeze, administrators are looking to tuition increases and additional fees as a potential source to make up for lost tax dollars.
Robert Tenuta, chief financial officer for the college, said McHenry County College ranks as the 24th lowest in the state with tuition prices at $102 per credit hour compared to the $112.75 per credit hour state average.
The maximum the college could charge is $131.15, but Tenuta proposed a 5 percent increase and a infrastructure fee to help cover the $41 million in deferred maintenance the college carries.
“It really forces the college to cover its operating expenses through tuition increases,” Tenuta said of freezing the levy, noting tuition is the second largest revenue stream.
MCC President Vicky Smith said while cuts are always possible, any budget slashes would start to directly hit departments and programs.
“We have cut any fat that there was in our budgets,” Smith said. “Now all that’s left ... is to cut departments and cut programs.”
The board is expected to discuss tuition rates in future meetings.

Mentally Strong People: The 13 Things They Avoid

1.    Waste Time Feeling Sorry for Themselves. You don’t see mentally strong people feeling sorry for their circumstances or dwelling on the way they’ve been mistreated. They have learned to take responsibility for their actions and outcomes, and they have an inherent understanding of the fact that frequently life is not fair. They are able to emerge from trying circumstances with self-awareness and gratitude for the lessons learned. When a situation turns out badly, they respond with phrases such as “Oh, well.” Or perhaps simply, “Next!”

2. Give Away Their Power. Mentally strong people avoid giving others the power to make them feel inferior or bad. They understand they are in control of their actions and emotions. They know their strength is in their ability to manage the way they respond.
3.    Shy Away from Change. Mentally strong people embrace change and they welcome challenge. Their biggest “fear,” if they have one, is not of the unknown, but of becoming complacent and stagnant. An environment of change and even uncertainty can energize a mentally strong person and bring out their best.
4. Waste Energy on Things They Can’t Control. Mentally strong people don’t complain (much) about bad traffic, lost luggage, or especially about other people, as they recognize that all of these factors are generally beyond their control. In a bad situation, they recognize that the one thing they can always control is their own response and attitude, and they use these attributes well.
5. Worry About Pleasing Others. Know any people pleasers? Or, conversely, people who go out of their way to dis-please others as a way of reinforcing an image of strength? Neither position is a good one. A mentally strong person strives to be kind and fair and to please others where appropriate, but is unafraid to speak up. They are able to withstand the possibility that someone will get upset and will navigate the situation, wherever possible, with grace.
It takes much practice to hone mental strength
6. Fear Taking Calculated Risks. A mentally strong person is willing to take calculated risks. This is a different thing entirely than jumping headlong into foolish risks. But with mental strength, an individual can weigh the risks and benefits thoroughly, and will fully assess the potential downsides and even the worst-case scenarios before they take action.
7. Dwell on the Past. There is strength in acknowledging the past and especially in acknowledging the things learned from past experiences—but a mentally strong person is able to avoid miring their mental energy in past disappointments or in fantasies of the “glory days” gone by. They invest the majority of their energy in creating an optimal present and future.
8. Make the Same Mistakes Over and Over. We all know the definition of insanity, right? It’s when we take the same actions again and again while hoping for a different and better outcome than we’ve gotten before. A mentally strong person accepts full responsibility for past behavior and is willing to learn from mistakes. Research shows that the ability to be self-reflective in an accurate and productive way is one of the greatest strengths of spectacularly successful executives and entrepreneurs.
9. Resent Other People’s Success. It takes strength of character to feel genuine joy and excitement for other people’s success. Mentally strong people have this ability. They don’t become jealous or resentful when others succeed (although they may take close notes on what the individual did well). They are willing to work hard for their own chances at success, without relying on shortcuts.
10. Give Up After Failure. Every failure is a chance to improve. Even the greatest entrepreneurs are willing to admit that their early efforts invariably brought many failures. Mentally strong people are willing to fail again and again, if necessary, as long as the learning experience from every “failure” can bring them closer to their ultimate goals.
11. Fear Alone Time. Mentally strong people enjoy and even treasure the time they spend alone. They use their downtime to reflect, to plan, and to be productive. Most importantly, they don’t depend on others to shore up their happiness and moods. They can be happy with others, and they can also be happy alone.
12. Feel the World Owes Them Anything. Particularly in the current economy, executives and employees at every level are gaining the realization that the world does not owe them a salary, a benefits package and a comfortable life, regardless of their preparation and schooling. Mentally strong people enter the world prepared to work and succeed on their merits, at every stage of the game.

13. Expect Immediate Results. Whether it’s a workout plan, a nutritional regimen, or starting a business, mentally strong people are “in it for the long haul”. They know better than to expect immediate results. They apply their energy and time in measured doses and they celebrate each milestone and increment of success on the way. They have “staying power.” And they understand that genuine changes take time. Do you have mental strength? Are there elements on this list you need more of? With thanks to Amy Morin, I would like to reinforce my own abilities further in each of these areas today. How about you?

Turkey recipes from around the world

Looking for turkey recipes to spice up your holiday menu? It's time to make new traditions this Thanksgiving with these turkey recipes from around the world.

Growing up the son of Cuban and Peruvian immigrants, Thanksgiving has always included ceviches, empanadas and a lot of Latin-influence for Victor Albisu, the chef/owner of award-winning South American grill, Del Campo. Pavo a la brasa is a twist on the popular Peruvian chicken dish (pollo a la brasa), which we serve at Del Campo.

Dr. Oz Gets 1 Step Closer to Becoming Ryan Gosling, Saves Two More People

Apparently Dr. Oz is channeling Ryan Gosling these days because the cardiologist turned TV star is running around saving people left and right. (Remember back when Gosling rescued a woman from a taxi cab accident? Of course you do.)

But Dr. Mehmet Oz's latest two acts of valor take his Good Samaritan streak to a whole new level. On Saturday, he and a civilian named Chris Simpson witnessed a serious car accident in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and jumped in to help.
"We were two cars back when the car in front was making a left-hand turn," the doc explained to the local paper. "It's a very dangerous intersection. A car crossing the intersection hit the car turning head-on. It was like a scene right out of a movie. I thought for sure there would be fatalities. Luckily, there were not."
A woman was stuck in her car, however, and Dr. Oz wasted no time before rushing to pry it open.
"I asked her if she was okay," he recalled. And, even in her precarious state, the woman was a bit star struck.
"She looked over at me and said, 'Oh, Dr. Oz.' It was surreal to have that happen, especially in that setting," he recounted. "I pulled her from the car because at that point, it was steaming and there was oil dripping."
It seems he got her out just in time, too, because the car "eventually started rolling back down the hill there and collided with another car before rolling into a deep ravine." Eek.
Simpson, who aided Dr. Oz with the rescue mission, tweeted a picture from the accident with the caption, "First on scene to a multi-vehicle multi-injury accident doing patient care side by side with Dr. Oz."

Catch An Illegal' Protest At U.T.-Austin Totally Backfires

An ill-fated attempt by a conservative student group to mock undocumented immigrants on the University of Texas at Austin campus has backfired.

The YoungAmerica Ferrera Rally Conservatives of Texas called off an event called “Catch and Illegal” planned for Wednesday in which participants would have chased down people carrying signs reading “illegal immigrant” and turned them over to the student group in exchange for $25 gift cards.
The backlash against the aborted immigration round up game was so strong, however, that instead U.T.-Austin hosted a pro-immigration reform rally. Some 500 students, including undocumented immigrants, attended the rally against the game at the Texas university, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

Gold bars worth $1.1m found in plane toilet in India

A stash of 24 gold bars worth more than $1.1m has been discovered in the toilet compartment of a commercial plane in eastern India.

Cleaners found the haul in two bags on board a Jet Airways flight at Kolkata airport, officials said.
India is one of the world's main gold consumers and imports are seen as a major contributor to the country's account deficit.
It recently raised duty on imports of gold jewellery to 15% from 10%.
It was the third increase this year as the government attempts to curb demand for the precious metal, which many Indians traditionally hoard in the belief it will bring financial security.
The plane on which the 1kg (2.2lb) gold bars were found on Tuesday had reportedly come from Bangkok, local media reported, before making stops in India.
"The cleaning staff of the airport were going though their routine duties and found two bags in the toilets of the plane," airport director BP Mishra told AFP news agency.

Adrian Peterson feels Eddie Lacy's pain

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- If anyone knows what Eddie Lacy has gone through the last couple of weeks, it's Adrian Peterson.
Eddie Lacy

Peterson, the Minnesota Vikings' star running back, has spent most of his NFL career dealing with defenses that game plan to stop him, which is exactly what Lacy, the Green Bay Packers' rookie running back, has faced the last two games.
Without starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who hasn't played since his Nov. 4 broken collarbone, Lacy has found things much more difficult. As we noted on Monday, in the last two games, the Packers have faced seven or more defenders in the box nearly twice as often in the last two games, according to ESPN Stats & Information, as they did in the first eight, when opposing defensive coordinators had to prepare for Rodgers and the Packers' prolific passing game.

Rarely in his seven-year NFL career with the Vikings has Peterson had the luxury of playing with a top-tier quarterback. Perhaps only in 2009, when Brett Favre had the better of his two seasons with the Vikings, did Peterson have that.

He certainly doesn't have it this year, when the Vikings have used three different quarterbacks (Christian Ponder, Matt Cassel and Josh Freeman).

"When you're not really passing the ball that well, teams can focus on the run, especially when you're a run-first team," Peterson said Wednesday during a conference call with reporters at Lambeau Field. "So it makes it difficult when the quarterback play is not up to par."

While the Packers have been pleased with the play of backup quarterback Scott Tolzien, who will make his second straight start on Sunday against the Vikings, so far he hasn't convinced opposing defensive coordinators to sit back and play coverage.
